Powers of Ten

Halfway between physics and religion
Are the powers of ten;
In every direction they extend
Hypotheses beyond decision;
There’s no escape, no rescue, on this gamut
For theorems from the creature they inhabit.

New wine in old bottles,
Old mystery in new equations;
The organ pipes’ emission spectra stopples
Resound on Götterdämmerung occasions.

Repent and make discrepancies obey with
Terms impermissible: God is a quark in
Answers when the prophet saith,
“Why did the skies not darken?”

He is and he isn’t — Faith;
It is and it isn’t — Science;
The human-divine doesn’t fit in the theory,
And fellow alighters deny their alliance;
No power in sight, no rest for the weary.
